Emergency Dental Care is something we will all inevitably experience, and hopefully it’s not while we are on vacation. It’s a situation none of us ever want to encounter, nor is it ever planned. Unfortunately, it will happen to all of us at some point in our lives. And, when emergency dental care comes up, it’s important to know what to do for yourself or your loved one in this situation.

Emergency Dental Care  Imagine the perfect family vacation on Hilton Head Island, SC. The beach sand has never felt softer and the palm trees are dancing in the wind. After a nice day with the family, you meet up with friends for a local dinner of Frogmore Stew. Everyone is catching up with each other’s lives, you nod, take a bite of smoked sausage, and you feel a cracking sensation in your mouth. Next you notice a sharp pain and begins to worsen. You’ve just cracked a tooth! Unfortunately, this story is a reality for many people; breaking a tooth is usually an unpleasant surprise. Emergency dental care is an unanticipated problem that delays any immediate plans you may have-whether you are on vacation or not. You need emergency care right away and you have to know what to do next.

Question: Who Are You Going To Call?
Answer: Call Us at (843) 815-7844

Emergency Dental Care  and Off Island Dental: Off Island Dental is prepared for any dental emergency care that you or your loved one may need. When patients call in a situation like this, we get them in as soon as possible. We are dental ninjas and our team takes these situations seriously. We are here to help you.

Typically there are two reasons for dental emergencies:
1st Restorative & 2nd Cosmetic

Restorative: dental treatment restores function, integrity, and morphology of missing tooth structure. During this dental visit, a patient is interested in getting out of pain as quickly as possible.
Cosmetic: dental treatment focuses on improving the color, position, shape, size, alignment, and/or overall smile appearance. This “emergency” can be sprung on due to unforeseen life situations such as a presentation, school photos, or an important meeting to attend.

While both of these are valid and understandable reasons, our team at Off Island Dental is prepared to help address any unexpected issues when they arise.

What Should You Do?
Before we can get you in the office, take these helpful tips into consideration:

If a tooth gets knocked out:
If you are injured in an accident or other form of trauma that your tooth gets knocked out, act quickly. Locate the tooth immediately. This is one of the most important steps to take. Sometimes you can still keep your natural tooth, but here’s the catcher: You have to transport it in your saliva or milk. This makes sure the tooth does not dry out before the restoration process.
Whoever the injured person may be, whether it be you or someone else, immediately rush the patient to get emergency dental care. In the best scenario, the tooth can get replanted. The tooth could be wired to an adjacent tooth for a healing period. Each situation is different.

Broken Tooth or Filling:
If you or someone you know has experienced a dental issue like this, try to place the broken material back into the tooth. This can be done with temporary filling materials that can be purchased at a pharmacy. If needed, sugar-free gum can be used. It’s important to have that broken tooth attached. Teeth can shift more quickly than most people realize. This can cause a more serious issue, so it’s super important to immediately place the broken tooth and get to our dental office.

If a Crown Comes Off:
If the area is not too sensitive, brush the area and do a warm salt water rinse. This keeps the area clean until treatment can be done. Just like the situation with a broken tooth, a tooth with a crown that has detached needs to be replaced. If teeth shift, it can be difficult and sometimes impossible to re-cement the crown. Avoid leaving the crown out for any period of time, especially for more than a couple of days. Until the appointment time, adhere the crown with the same temporary filling you would use with a broken tooth. Until the emergency time you can use denture cream or chewing gum to gently put the crown back into place.

Tooth Pain/ Toothache:
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Make sure to gently brush and floss the area, removing any debris or trapped foods. Over the counter medicine such as Ibprophen. This can help with the pain and discomfort of a toothache. Orajel or other similar topical gels can help as well. Many holistic healing remedies suggest putting olive leaf extract or a whole clove of garlic on the pain site. Even if the pain goes away temporarily, it will most likely come back. The toothache can even get worse.

When In Need, Call Off Island Dental!
Call us at (843) 815-7844 as soon as possible to schedule an appointment at the earliest time that you can be seen. The more time that passes, the more pain and discomfort can occur. Treatment to replant the natural tooth can be less likely as the time passes, so make it a priority to be seen by our dental team.
If you happen to be out of town, visit the nearest Emergency Room or Urgent Care. If there is an Emergency Dental Care dentist nearby, visit their office as soon as possible, bearing in mind the tips we have given you. In any of these situations, make sure you schedule a follow-up appointment with your dental family at Off Island Dental.

You may not be able to anticipate the on-set of a dental emergency, but rest assured you are in good hands with us. We strive to give all of our patients and visitors the swift, expert, emergency dental care that you and your loved ones need in a time of unforeseen circumstances.
